Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker at the age of a little girl, she had to help support the family working both as a cook and server. Ruth was born in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in high school. Following only two school years the young woman left to pursue an acting career. The path she chose was not without obstacles. In New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. her dream of performing in the theater she longed to do was abyssal. Then in NYC, she worked at a bar, as the check-in lady before resigning and moving back to Boston. In Boston, when she worked at late night, she was an actor for New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time as an usherette. She took classes in drama in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
